Luminant Joins FutureGen Alliance
WASHINGTON, December 6 — The FutureGen Alliance announced today that Luminant, a subsidiary of Energy Future Holdings (EFH), has joined the non-profit consortium of global electric utilities and coal companies working with the U.S. Department of Energy to site and develop FutureGen, a first-of-a-kind coal-fueled power plant with near-zero emissions.
Luminant is the thirteenth company to become a member of the Alliance, which is designing and will construct and operate this near-zero coal-fueled power plant that will generate electricity by hydrogen-driven turbines and will capture and permanently store carbon dioxide deep underground.
FutureGen Alliance Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Mudd said that Luminant's membership in the FutureGen Alliance further demonstrates industry's growing support for the program.
"Luminant's addition to the world-class utility and coal companies across the globe who are Alliance members continues to build momentum and support for the FutureGen program," said Mudd. "We welcome the opportunity to work with Luminant as we advance technologies to reduce carbon emissions while continuing to use coal."
"Luminant is proud to be joining the FutureGen Alliance. Our membership is a sign of our commitment to explore new, innovative, emerging technologies that will help generate cleaner, more efficient energy," said Luminant CEO Mike Greene. "The FutureGen project represents the next step in environmentally-friendly coal-fueled generation, and will ultimately result in cleaner electricity production."
Four candidate sites are in the running to host FutureGen - Odessa and Jewett in Texas and Mattoon and Tuscola in Illinois. Last month, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released its final environmental impact statement in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. The FutureGen Alliance is on schedule to announce the final site selection by the end of December, pending release of the final list of acceptable sites in DOE's Record of Decision (ROD).
The FutureGen Alliance represents some of the world's largest coal companies and electric utilities including: American Electric Power Service Corporation, Anglo American Services (UK) Limited, BHP Billiton Energy Coal, Inc., China Huaneng Group, CONSOL Energy Inc., E.ON U.S. LLC, Foundation Coal Corporation, PPL Energy Services Group, LLC, Peabody Energy Corporation, Rio Tinto Energy America Services, Southern Company Services, Inc., and Xstrata Coal Pty Limited. The Alliance is partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy to design and build the facility.
These companies provide energy to tens of millions of residential, business, and industrial customers in Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, The People's Republic of China, South Africa and the United States, among other regions.
