The Alliance
Overview
The FutureGen Industrial Alliance, Inc, a non-profit consortium of some of the largest coal producers and users in the world, was formed to partner with the U.S. Department of Energy on the FutureGen project.
The active role of industry in this project ensures that the public and private sector share the cost and risk of developing the advanced technologies necessary to commercialize the FutureGen concept. Alliance members intend to contribute nearly $400 million toward the project's costs and, in addition, will bring valuable technical expertise and industrial project management experience to the project. Further, the Alliance will facilitate the introduction of advanced technologies into the plant that are based upon billions of dollars of past industrial investment.
The Alliance members have vested interest in the success of FutureGen. A secure source of affordable and reliable electricity is key to fueling growing economies around the world. The Alliance recognizes the role coal is playing and will play in delivering power worldwide and the importance of providing innovative technology to meet the demand for clean energy generated from coal. Testing and commercialization of advanced coal-generation coupled with large-scale geologic sequestration is required to prove the technical efficacy of this integrated approach. FutureGen provides a commercial-scale R&D facility for the Alliance to implement such technology-based solutions to world energy needs, while supporting continued environmental improvement in the energy industry. The Alliance members believe that development and operation of FutureGen will spur economic development in the U.S., and will serve as a model for similar plants that will help fuel the world's growing economy.
